It feels like many firms are offering fewer NQ roles this year, for a range of reasons.

If you find yourself in that position, here’s what I’d suggest:

1. Decide which practice area you want to qualify into

This will shape the firms you target and how you present yourself.

2. Make a shortlist of firms

Think about the firms you’d realistically want to join, based on the work, team, location and culture.

3. Plan how you will approach each firm

As a rule, approach firms directly where you already have strong relationships.

Where you don’t, it can make more sense to use a recruiter.

4. Choose your recruiter carefully

Look at whether:

  •  they specialise in legal recruitment
  •  they know the firms you’re targeting
  •  they take the time to understand you properly

That last point matters. There’s a big difference between being sent to any firm with an opening and being introduced to firms that are actually a good fit.

5. Get your CV in order

Make sure your CV is clear, current and focused on the work you want to do.  Sometimes the recruiter you’re working with will know what those reviewing the CV like to see on it, and help you draft it.

6. Approach firms in a sensible order

Try not to create a situation where you’re interviewing with multiple firms at once if you’re not serious about all of them. It can waste people’s time, and the legal market has a long memory.

A better approach is to make a shortlist and work through it in order.

Often it makes sense to start with firms that are closest to you geographically, assuming they meet your criteria.

If you want to talk through your situation and whether we can help, feel free to get in touch.
